Since teachers and staff are set as Administrators on their laptops, they are able to install apps and upgrades without help from support. They are free to install updates, such as the upgrade to the Mavericks operating system if they choose. Ed Tech support staff will have the most recent updated OS available for use when re-imaging laptops for staff, which at the time of this post is Mavericks.
Since students are not administrators on their laptops, they are unable to install or upgrade without intervention from support staff. The massive numbers of laptops and the manpower needed to install upgrades on every machine therefore prevents us from installing OS upgrades on student laptops. The expectation is that a laptop will have the same OS as was installed when purchased. Student laptops purchased in 2011-12 will have Lion. Student laptops purchased in 2012-13 will have Mountain Lion. Student laptops purchased in 2013-14 will have Mountain Lion.
